Ask our concierge →An 1890s wool store built for the pastoral trade, extended twice, heritage listed, and working again as offices since 2016.
The building at 100 Harris Street began as a wool store. Schute, Bell, Badgery & Lumby, an established wool broker, came to Pyrmont in 1906 and bought land from the University of Sydney in 1910 to build between Harris and Pyrmont Streets. Two floors were added in 1913, and further land bought in 1925 and 1941 was cleared to create a self contained store. The firm was sold to the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency by 1948.
It is heritage listed, and the fabric is the reason: ornate brick facades, exposed timber beams and a central atrium that still carries daylight into the middle of a deep floorplate, which is not something a modern building of this footprint achieves without a lightwell.
The conversion to workspace completed in 2016, about 9,000 square metres across two levels, with interiors by Tom Mark Henry that expose the original structure rather than line it out. Pyrmont sits between the CBD and the bay, a short walk over Pyrmont Bridge to Town Hall and on the light rail at The Star and John Street Square.
