Building overview

An elliptical tower around a full-height atrium

An elliptical, column-free tower turned to the harbour, wrapped in Australia's first high-rise double-skin glass facade and organised around a naturally ventilated atrium that runs its full height.

Completed in 2011 at a cost of around $270 million, 1 Bligh Street was designed by ingenhoven architects of Germany with Architectus and is one of the most awarded office buildings in the country — it took the CTBUH Best Tall Building award for Asia and Australasia in 2012, the first Australian building to do so, and the CTBUH 10 Year Award of Excellence in 2021.

The tower offers 27 office levels with typical column-free floorplates of about 1,600 square metres over roughly 43,400 square metres of net lettable area. Sustainability is built into the base building rather than bolted on: blackwater recycling, tri-generation, sensor-controlled blinds and external louvres, and a rooftop solar array added in 2021. It holds a 6 Star Green Star rating and NABERS ratings of 5.0 Energy, 5.0 Water, 6.0 Indoor Environment and 6.0 Waste.
