Ask our concierge →Not a new tower in the ordinary sense: the 1976 AMP Centre rebuilt in place, keeping over 65 per cent of the original structure and roughly doubling its floor area.
Between 2018 and 2022 the Danish practice 3XN, with Australian architects BVN, engineer BG&E and builder Multiplex, kept the 188-metre original tower's structural skeleton and built outward and upward from it. 3XN states that over 65 per cent of the original beams, columns and slabs and 95 per cent of the original core were retained; the owner describes the building as reusing over two-thirds of its original structure. The work took the building from about 45,000 to about 89,000 square metres of floor area.
The tower reads as five stacked volumes, each turned relative to the one below so the northern facade steps progressively east as it rises — opening harbour and Opera House views, self-shading the north face from afternoon sun and creating terraces at each step. Each volume is organised around its own north-facing atrium, which brings daylight deep into floorplates of around 2,000 square metres. It was named World Building of the Year in 2022 and CTBUH Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2023, and holds a 6 Star Green Star rating.
