Barrack Place was designed by Architectus for Investa, built by Built, and completed in 2018. It replaced a 16,000 square metre B-grade building with about 22,000 square metres over 23 levels, and was the only prime grade office development in the Sydney CBD to reach practical completion that year.
It holds a 6 Star Green Star rating and a 5.5 star NABERS Energy rating, and was the first building in Australia to receive a WELL Core & Shell Gold pre-certification. WELL is a health standard rather than an energy one, which is the point of the building: air, light and water were designed as tenant amenity, not as a compliance exercise.
The base is deliberately not a glass podium. A brick facade with black steel detailing and ground floor laneways leased to bars and cafes puts the retail into the street rather than behind a lobby, on a block between Kent and Clarence that had very little of it.
