5 Martin Place opened in 1916 as the first Sydney head office of the Commonwealth Bank, designed by John Kirkpatrick and known as the Money Box building. A matching sandstone extension along Pitt and Rowe Streets followed in 1933.
Cbus Property and Dexus redeveloped the site in 2015, with Johnson Pilton Walker and Tanner Kibble Denton adding a new tower above the heritage building. The result is 19 levels and about 33,860 square metres, with heritage floorplates of roughly 2,400 square metres and tower floorplates of about 1,090. Cbus Property bought out Dexus in June 2024 and now owns the building outright.
The building holds a 5.5 star NABERS Energy rating, a 4 star NABERS Water rating and a 5 Star Green Star Office As Built rating. The redevelopment won the Property Council of Australia Development of the Year in 2017 and a UNESCO Asia Pacific heritage award in 2018. Challenger and HUB24 are office tenants and WeWork operates a coworking floor.
